Family activity day

Great St. Mary’s are hosting a free family activity day on 14 July, 11.00 am–4.00 pm for the HLF- backed project, A Window on the War: the women of Cambridge in WW1. The day is designed by historical event and public engagement specialists HistoryNeedsYou, and features: music and songs from WW1 performed by Rachel Duffield, A Merrie Noyse and Oliver Cross; living history displays, enabling visitors to learn about wartime nursing, the life of a soldier, women’s work, soldiers from the Commonwealth and the wider world; guided walks around the key WW1 sites of central Cambridge; a talk by project researcher Simon Cross; displays telling the stories of the men commemorated on the war memorial in GSM, their wives, mothers and sisters, and hands-on craft activities for children.

The activity day is followed by a drama, from 7.00 pm–9.00 pm, telling the stories of two soldiers and their mothers, based on research carried out as part of the project, including letters.

Entry to both events is free of charge.
